Christmas OrnamentsThe holidays can be a stressful time for individuals, both personally and professionally. Between buying and wrapping gifts, attending holiday parties and visiting with extending family, workers may not have much more head space to focus on end-of-year projects at work. It’s no surprise that today’s heavily scheduled society faces additional responsibilities, and therefore stress, during the holidays than is average during the rest of the year. As an employer or manager, there are steps you can take to alleviate some of this seasonal stress. Try some of the following methods:
  • Schedule a touch-base meeting with each employee that you manage to see how things are going. Are their tasks on schedule? If not, why and how can you help? Are they overloaded? Do they have time to help another worker who is currently overloaded? This type of communication helps you prioritize work so it gets done without employees reaching their breaking point.
  • If your office or department participates in a gift exchange, such as Secret Santa, consider the financial burden when setting dollar limits. Setting a modest limit, such as $15-$30, will allow more people to participate comfortably.
  • Spending the last hour of a day to decorate the office is something fun for your employees to participate in, while simultaneously getting to know one another on a more personal level. Be sure to include decorations for all winter holidays, not just Christmas.
  • Celebrate the year’s successes, perhaps with a toast or inspirational speech. Rehash the hard work that made those successes possible and thank everyone for their dedication. People want to feel valued and appreciated; it can give them the morale boost they need to continue working hard into next year.
  • Keep employees in the loop for the year to come. Talk about new company goals or changing business plans. When employees know the bigger picture of what they’re working toward, it can help them work more efficiently.
  • Consider offering flexible hours or a few half-days during the season. Employees will appreciate being able to take the time to accomplish their personal seasonal goals. With a bit more time to get personal tasks out of the way, employees can come into work with a clearer head.
  • If you decide to host a holiday party, consider setting the date after New Year’s when everyone has more free time. Another option is to plan the party during scheduled work hours. Employees will be relieved that the party won’t interfere with their personal time. Make sure that any costs associated with attending the party are minimal to prevent a source of financial stress.
  • Offer a holiday bonus to employees. It shows your compassion and care during a time when many people’s finances are stretched thin. You may even instate a company policy that holiday bonuses will be given to employees who meet certain goals, therefore ensuring their hard work while still offering a valuable reward.
