The holidays are a busy and often stressful time for many people, and your employees are no exception. They may be preparing to visit family or preparing to have family come visit them, therefore a strict work schedule during the this time of year may be a hindrance to employee productivity. Try some of the following techniques to accommodate the busy personal schedules of your employees:

  • Offer flexible hours: Rather than maintaining rigid work hours, allow your employees some flexibility. If an individual needs to come in a few hours late to perform various holiday duties, simply allow them to work a few hours later or through lunch to make up the time (rather than using paid time off). This flexibility allows workers to complete their job tasks without worrying about something personal they should be doing at the moment.
  • Offer floating holidays: Since not everyone celebrates the same holidays, floating holidays provide a great solution. Most companies give their employees Christmas as a paid holiday, but what about individuals of other faiths? With floating holidays, employees can choose what days they’d prefer to take off, such as the holidays that they celebrate.
  • Plan for backup: It’s inevitable that some employees will take time off during the holiday season to visit family. However, this can be a source of stress if they know that work will be piled up on their return. Instead, plan ahead of time to reallocate the workload so every employee that takes time off will have backup. This can be applied anytime during the year when an employee takes time off.
  • Relieve stress: This season comes with stresses involving travel, preparing for guests, meeting work deadlines before taking time off and even finances after gift shopping. Relieving stress as much as possible at work can help your employees feel more comfortable and confident, which increases productivity. Plan a potluck holiday lunch, organize a gift exchange with a low maximum budget, give bonus checks in lieu of a holiday party, etc. Showing your employees that you care about their personal well being is an important part of being an employer.
